Back in the Blogging World Again*

In an effort to crank-start my blog, I have joined a few of my fellow writers from my writing group, Write On Mamas, have agreed to commit to writing one or two blog posts over the next month, and then visit each other's blogs and comment.

Quite by chance, I had a fabulous, clever and witty new post spring effortlessly into my head during my morning meditation two days ago. I often do this, have amazing and creative ideas when I meditate, along with devising massive To Do lists and obsessing over family members and wondering if they would appreciate my wise counsel and 'helpful' suggestions. My Buddhist nun sister says this is called 'Monkey Mind'. Charming! But also pretty accurate. My mind, when I ask it to sit quietly and think of nothing, jumps from one thought branch to another like a chimpanzee on crack. No wonder I have not yet morphed into a creature of zen calm and wisdom.

Anyway, I obviously could not remember the incredibly funny and brilliant post from my meditation, as I am now a 'woman-of-a-certain-age' and have the memory span of a pissed goldfish, so I am going to have to think of something else to write about. Damn.

The reason I have not written a post for over a year is because it was taking up too much of my time and attention, and meant that I was not writing my memoir, which was the whole sodding point of starting a blog in the first place. To 'build my platform' as all the  marketing gurus will tell you, is essential if you want to get a publishing contract, which, of course I do, so that I will be become rich and famous and have people swooning over my magical prose and hysterical hyperbole (I just learned this word from my new critique partner). The problem is that I am too easily distracted. It's bad enough with emails and Facebook and constant interruptions from my family, but add a blog to the mix and I am well and truly done for!

The good news is that I used the time not-blogging to actually finish my book! Yay! The bad news is that it is just the 'shitty first draft' as Anne Lamott is fond of saying, and I am now deep in the throes of re-writing and editing it. Still, I am feeling encouraged as I can almost see the light at the end of a very long, demanding, and extremely dirty tunnel.

I am hoping that I am now disciplined enough to be able to manage a blog, as well as editing my book. We shall see. In the meantime, I should probably decide what exactly I am blogging about!

Here are my fellow Write On Mamas blogs if you want to pop over and say Hello:

(* Just in case you are not a David Gray fan, this is a play on one of his songs: Back in the World Again. Clever, right? But only if you are a Gray fan, otherwise it would have gone completely over your head, hence I am explaining it now, which is never good, right? Perhaps I should change the title …)

A last look at 2012

Hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and wishing you all a healthy, happy and harmonious New Year.

I have been pretty much out of the blogging loop for a couple of months or so but wanted to wish everyone a really lovely Christmas and a very happy New Year. I hope that 2013 will usher in a new time for us all. The Golden Age. Doesn't that sound wonderful. Let's hope we can all put aside our differences and live alongside each other in peace and harmony.

I have found that this is much easier than I thought it would be and that it doesn't matter if I don't agree with someone else's views or if they don't like mine. We can still exist in the same space in love and friendship, whether it is at home or work or anywhere else. The whole point of being here is to experience different things and how boring would it be if we all liked doing the same things or thought the same way. I love meeting new people, hearing different ways of thinking, and discovering new things to do. I would hate it if we all lived the same way. Diversity is interesting. If nothing else, it shows me what I don't want, which in turn helps me to work out what I DO want. It also helps if I don't let other people's opinions influence me too much and if I can not care too much what other people think.

I am having the best fun at the moment manifesting an amazing life. It seems no sooner do I formulate what I want in my mind, then it becomes a reality, in ways I couldn't even imagine. Much better than I would have allowed myself to dream was possible. My life is not perfect by any means, but I am learning that all the bumps and potholes along the way just give me opportunities to grow and become a better person. Somehow I appreciate what I have more when I have to go through a struggle to get it, although this ease and abundance I am currently experiencing is bloody fab. So, actually, scrap that, I'm gonna stop stuggling and just have fun instead.

2012 for me was a year of receiving. It seemed that I was reaping the rewards of past hard work, physically and spiritually. I allowed myself to receive too, which is a newer experience for me, as I always thought that giving was the most important trait. I have decided I like receiving, especially expensive and beautiful jewellry from my husband. LOL

2013 is going to be a year of being more disciplined and for focusing on the things that are more important to me, rather than being distracted by the everyday stuff. I am going to start a regular writing and blogging schedule, balance work and home effectively, spend more quality time with my husband and children, but also have time for friends and family. I am going to eat more healthily and consciously and, hopefully, lose some weight (hmmm, that's new one for me). I am going to pay off my UK credit card (ha ha ha yes, I can hear you all laughing, but I am, I am, I AM going to be debt free!).
I am going to start a regular meditation schedule (yes, I know I was really good for a while there back in May and June but it has gradually been dropping off my radar). I am going to start stretching my poor aching muscles, become more supple (ha!) and maybe even start a yoga class (well, I do live in hippy California - it's practically a requirement).

And ... I am going to finish my sodding memoir and become a famous successful author and have lovely-jubbly Brad Pitt and George Clooney star in the film of my best-selling book. So there!

OK that's me. What about you? What are your New Year's Resolutions or do you not believe in them or fail miserably in the first couple of weeks. What was good for you in 2012 and what are you looking forward to in 2013?

I Miss You Blogfest

This blogfest is hosted by Alex Cavanaugh, Matt MacNish and Andrew Leon. It goes without saying that the whole blogging community would miss these guys if they stopped posting. Please take a moment to head over there and say Hi to them all. They all blog extensively and are a total inspiration.

This blogfest is about our blogger friends. Who would we really miss if they stopped blogging and those who aren't posting as often or have stopped altogether. So first up are the some of my favourite bloggers. They are funny, generous and I would bloody hate it if they didn't blog anymore.

Lily from The Incoherent Ramblings of a Moose! She is utterly hysterical, crazy as shit and blogs about really weird stuff that might, or might not, have happened to her. She is not for the faint of heart, so be warned. I love her though and would absolutely hate, hate, hate it if she stopped blogging. Like me, she has been finding it hard to blog as much recently. Is it something in the air, do you think?

Pat from It's Rhyme Time. Another one who is barking mad, or should I say meowing mad! It is written in rhyme by Pat's cat. Hmmm I think that says it all. He blogs every day, which by itself is an amazing task. I did that for one month for the A-Z Challenge and it nearly killed me! He always comments on my posts even when I don't comment on his, which is just too lovely for words. He's written a ton of books, so please go and visit his blog. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Pat. You're Top Cat.

Bridget Straub is someone who I have met through blogging and she is so great. She has a fab blog, which I only manage to comment on occassionally, as I can't seem to find time to do anything these days. She writes more than anyone I know - three books in one year! She is kind, funny, generous and brave. Check out her blog and all her books. She will be guesting on my blog very soon, so please come back and see her then.

Now here are some bloggers who don't blog as often or who have stopped altogether:

Rachael Harrie of Rach Writes was the reason why I started blogging in the first place. Her Third Platform-Building Campaign back in August 2011 started me off. She seems to have stopped the Campaigns which, although I can totally understand why as they must have been an unearthly amount of work, is a sad thing as they were such good fun and I met so many new people. She still blogs and is definitely worth visiting. She always has a lot of great information on her blog.

Gillian Hefer from A Daft Scots Lass has just stopped blogging in September. She was always off the wall and swore more than any drunken Glaswegian stumbling out of the pub on a Friday night. I will miss her tell-it-like-it-is humour and ruder-than-hell remarks. Hopefully she will just take a well-earned rest and be back with more in the New Year.

Back from the blogging wilderness

Hellooooo! I'm back. Yes, I know it's been bloody ages since I last blogged. Bad Claire. I have just been having waaaay too much fun. Let me give you a very brief insight into just how much fun I have been having these last few weeks.

August was basically "Holiday Month" for me. I went south for a lovely, girlie weekend with my 17 year old daughter to Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel. I've still got to write Part Three - sorry, will get to that soon. Then I went north to Fort Bragg with my hubby, my 15 year old son and his friend. That was fun too, but in a different, more manly way. Then I barely had time to unpack and do laundry before I was off again. This time to San Diego. Oh my god! A whole week just with my gorgeous husband and no children. Heaven.

It was my 50th birthday and instead of having a huge party at home, which I was thinking of doing but then just seemed like a whole lot of sodding work and expense for us, my hubby took me away for a week. We spent 3 days in San Diego (I am officially in love with SD) and then 3 days staying with amazing friends who live about 40 mins outside SD.

The 11 Questions Tag Game

I have been tagged again. This time it's the lovely Mimi at Magical Mystical Mimi    I have to thank. I love this one because it is all about my lucky number 11. Here are the rules:

  • Each person must post 11 things about themselves on their blog.
  • Answer the 11 questions the tagger set for you in their post.
  • Create 11 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
  • Choose 11 people to tag and link them on the post.
  • Go to their page and tell them you have linked him or her.
  • No tag backs and you legitimately have to tag 11 people.

A-Z Reflections

A-Z Challenge - Reflections

Initially, when I heard about the A-Z Challenge, I thought "No way, that sounds like so much hard work". I really should have left it at that. But no, not me. I kept seeing the badge everywhere and after a while it felt like I was the only one not invited to the party. Also, my new job was going through a very quiet period and I was able to spend all day blogging, so I thought: "Why not? How hard can it be?" Ha! Famous last bloody words!

Because I literally only signed up less than week before the start, I only had time to write about 5 posts ahead of time, but I was thrilled. FIVE posts ahead of time. How cool and organised is that? Little did I know how completely inept and unprepared I was for the challenge. I soon learnt the error of my ways. The whole point of the A-Z is to meet other bloggers and build your platform.

So, the goal: short, easy to read posts, pre-scheduled, and then off to visit as many other blogs as possible each day.

What actually happened: long, convoluted and VERBOSE posts, written the day (or night) before, whilst desperately trying to read as many blogs as I could fit in around that. Most nights, instead of rampant sex, I would be panicking and saying to the Bug: "Quick, what words begin with --?" and then somehow come up with a post for the next day when something he said sparked an idea. Most of it was utter nonsense.

Before the A-Z, I only blogged sporadically. Sometimes once a week, sometimes twice. But blogging every day meant I got to really make friends with other bloggers. The same people would stop by nearly every day and it was great returning the favour. I would look forward to reading their posts every day. Somehow that didn't happen when I only blogged when I felt like it, so I can really see the benefit of having a regular schedule of blogging (as I was told by the very astute Laura B Writer a while ago when she critiqued my blog), if not every day. I increased my followers by about 35 or 36 so that was really great too.

However, the best, best, best thing about the A-Z was all the wonderful, fabby new blogs and bloggers I got to meet. I would never have found half of them without that excellent linky list (what a great invention). I thought I would list the stand-outs for me:

Fart-makingly funny:
Lily from The Incoherent Ramblings of a Moose! Questions and Rabbits
The whole A-Z Challenge would have been worthwhile just to find Lily's blog. She is utterly hilarious. Her posts have me literally laughing uncontrollably. The conversations she has with her son are just too funny, in a warped way. If you don't follow Lily yet, you really ought to - you're missing a gem.

Chiz Chat - P is for Professor
He had so many excellent and hilarious posts, including kidnapping himself, his alter ego holding himself for ransom, freeing himself and continuing with challenge. So clever, original and yet so funny. This particular post is his critique of a Shakespeare sonnet.

Interesting:
Miranda Hardy
Miranda did her entire A-Z Challenge on dreams. Interpretations on dreaming about a subject with a different letter of the alphabet every day. A was for Alligator. It was so interesting, especially the Naked one.

Clever:
Sue had an amazing idea for the A-Z. She wrote a single story, Approaching Zero, in 26 parts, each 100 words long, and each day starting with that day's letter and ending with the next day's letter. Very imaginative and clever, and obviously she was also one of the organised ones that had hers written and scheduled before it even started.

Poetry:

Sally's Scribbles
Sally from
I am not really one for poetry (unless it's silly and funny and a bit Monty Python'ish) but I was hooked by Sally's lovely poems every day. I may even be a poetry convert now. They were so easy to read, even when she tackled some really difficult subjects. I'm amazed she doesn't have more followers. Go give her some support please.

Ok - so that is my summary of the A-Z Challenge. In the end, I really enjoyed it and learnt tons. I will definitely do it again next year, but this time I shall be better prepared. And not quite so random. And maybe not post such utter nonsense. What do you think? Did you enjoy reading mine and others? What was your favourite post/blog?

Fourth Writer's Platform-Building Campaign

Rachael Harrie from Rach Writes has launched her Fourth Writer's Platform Building Campaign. This is a fantastic blogging opportunity for all writers and I enthusiastically encourage anyone to sign up.  Whether you have just started a blog (like me last time) or are a seasoned blogger, whether you write for fun or have a stream of best-selling titles to your name, it is a great opportunity to connect with other writers/bloggers, make friends and raise your profile at the same time.

All the details are over on Rachael's blog but the important dates are:

  • The Fourth Campaign will be a mini-Campaign, and will run from Monday 6 February until Saturday 17 March.
  • The List of Campaigners will close on Wednesday 15 February.
  • The First Campaigner Challenge will begin on Monday 20 February end on Saturday 25 February.
  • The Second Challenge will begin on Monday 5 March and end on Saturday 10 March.
My only advice (based on my experience from last time) is don't get over-excited and put your name onto too many of the Campaigner Groups. I drove myself crazy trying to get round to everyone's blogs on all the groups that I stupidly signed up for in a fit of writerly madness.

Otherwise, it's a blast! I learnt such a lot and met so many great bloggers. Drop me a note and let me know if you are going to join up and what your favourite bit was if you were on the last Campaign. I think what I liked best was the first flash fiction Challenge.

Looking back at 2011

As 2011 draws to a close, I thought I would jot down some of my more notable writing achievements that happened over the year.

Firstly, after two years of procrastinating, I started this blog! I am still finding my way in the new parallel universe that is the blogging world, and have yet to firmly establish what the hell I'm doing here, but I am enjoying it nonetheless. I am going to work on all the points Laura Barnes mentioned in her critique and hopefully have a new and improved blog in 2012. I've changed my background already.
