Meditation - Day 1

Meditation: Day 1 - How did I do?

So, how did my first day of meditation go yesterday? I got up at 5am and was at work by 6am. Yes, I know, it sounds horrific doesn't it? But I am normally the only person there for about the first hour, so it's nice and quiet and I get to wake up slowly. Yesterday morning I thought I would play some nice meditation music by Mark Romero, light a candle to create a cosy atmosphere, sit comfortably in my chair and meditate.

The first thing that went wrong was I forgot to bring anything to light my sodding candle! I rummaged around checking drawers for a while but no luck. So instead, I just opened the lid, gave it a sniff and placed in on my desk. It didn't create quite the same atmosphere but what's a girl to do?

I settled myself in to meditate. First I closed my eyes, shifted around a bit in my chair and scratched all these itches that suddenly appeared out of nowhere - my nose, my head, my forearm, my cheek, itching everywhere, like I had ants crawling all over me. Trying my best to ignore them, I placed one hand in the palm of the other. I started by grounding myself - I imagined roots flowing out of my spine into the earth, like the roots of a tree. I then imagined a golden sun above me and breathed it in through the top of my head and throughout my body, letting all my negativity and stress (and itches) flow into the earth. The music was soothing and I was just starting to feel a bit relaxed when ...

...  the bloody phone rang! As the only reason I am in at 6am is to answer the phones, I felt honour-bound to get it. Luckily, it was a quick call.

So, where was I? Oh yes, soft music, closed eyes, grounded, golden sunlight flowing into my body. Good. I then imagined each chakra. Starting from the bottom chakra at the base of my spine/groin, I imagined it spinning, like a wheel or a fan, and getting faster and faster. I also tried to picture the colours of each chakra. I then visualised the golden sunlight mixing with the chakras and worked my way up my body til I got to the top chakra. I was just starting to feel nice and calm when ...

... a bloody work colleague appeared! What the hell was she doing at work at this ungodly hour? Arrrgh! However, I really like her and I know she is very stressed on a particular event and so I gave up on the meditating and chatted with her.

I did at least meditate for about 15 minutes if you include the total time with interruptions. Better than not doing it at all. Maybe I will have to adjust where and when I meditate and perhaps be a little more prepared.

So, all in all, I would say that this baby looks like it meditates better than me.

What did anyone else manage?

  1. Babies have less to do, just poo, eat and cry so they can meditate easy..LOL

  2. I've tried to meditate but it always seems to go the way you just described, LOL. If it isn't the itches, it's the lists running through my mind. I think it's fabulous you're trying this and wish you luck with the process.

    1. Thanks Raelyn. Practice makes perfect! Although I must be v slow learner as I have been meditating on and off for years and still have problems. And argh, those lists!

  3. First the A-Z Challenge and now daily meditation. Oh how I admire you.
I can never get past the itching and muscle twitches, to be able to meditate properly. But it is something that I would dearly love to do.

Look forward to reading more, as you progress. :)

    1. Thanks Lily. I have never managed to meditate regularly so hoping this month I will get into a habit.

  4. LOL, this was hilarious! Pretty much the same for me, itching, dogs barking, I could hear the guided meditation lady swallowing...

    1. Ha ha - it's amazing how we can concentrate on everything but the very thing we want to. Looking forward to hearing your progress.

  5. Sorry your first attempt ran into so many glitches, but at least it made for some funny reading, right? Maybe what you need to do is get yourself a cat... or two ... and watch them to get some pointers. I'm telling ya, those critters are veritable masters of meditation. They look self-hypnotized at times.

    1. Ahh I agree. I have two cats and I think they are very spiritual creatures. Wouldn't it be nice to come back as a cat - they seem to have a wonderful life ... well, mine do anyway.

  6. I remember those days and what has helped me is really just tossing "technique" aside for the moment and just concentrating on your breathing. Deep breaths in thru the nose, slowly releasing out the mouth.. It helps tremendously.. Slowing your breathing slows everything including your mind. Don't give up. It's worth it! :)

    1. Yes, good advice, thanks. Concentrating on my breathing always helps. I do need to slow down. Thanks MiMi :)

  7. Next time try to find a quiet place. I do not do music or candles - I just close my eyes, breathe, relax and in my mind go to my "pretty place". I use to have a cat who jump right on my lap while I was in a deep meditation... can you imagine how frighten I was?

    Evalina, This and that...

  8. I love the image of you sniffing the candle! Good luck with the meditation. I've found a great variety of guided meditations at I listen to them via an iPhone app, and I love that she records different meditations for different subjects. Keep us posted on how it goes!
